How do I run a tournament?
Create a tournament, then type or paste the entry list — one name per line. That is the whole entry process; ratings, titles and clubs are optional and can be added later by tapping a player. Pair round 1, enter the results as they come in, then confirm the round. Confirming is what unlocks the next pairing, so you always know whether a round is finished.
How many rounds should I run?
By default the app sizes the schedule from your field: a Swiss of R rounds can only separate up to 2ⁿ players, so 13 players need at least 4 rounds, and the app adds one round of margin. If your schedule fixes the number, turn off Match rounds to the field in the tournament settings and set it yourself.
Why did a player get the same colour twice in a row?
Colours are meant to alternate, and the pairing engine searches for the set of pairings with the fewest repeats. Perfect alternation is not always possible: if a score bracket holds six players owed black and four owed white, someone has to repeat. This is normal in any Swiss tournament. What the rules forbid — three of the same colour in a row, or a colour imbalance beyond two — is avoided except in rare cases where a bracket cannot otherwise be paired at all.
Can I use this for a FIDE-rated tournament?
No. The pairing engine implements the Swiss system at club strength. It is not a full implementation of the FIDE Dutch system (C.04.3) and does not produce TRF files for rating submission. The arbiter remains responsible for checking pairings, results and final standings.
A player has withdrawn. What do I do?
Swipe their row in the Players tab and choose Withdraw. They will not be paired again, but they keep their results and their place in the standings. If they withdraw after a round has already been paired, their board stays on the sheet — enter a forfeit result on it so the round can be closed. A withdrawn player can be reinstated the same way.
How do byes work?
If the field is odd, the lowest-placed player who has not yet had one receives a full-point bye automatically. You can also grant a half-point or zero-point bye in advance by tapping a player and turning on Half-point bye next round.
How do I print the pairings?
Each tab exports as a PDF from the share button: the entry list, the pairing sheets, and the standings. A single round also exports on its own from inside that round — that is the sheet to put on the wall. A round that has not been played prints with an empty result column so results can be written in by hand.
Sharing to WhatsApp only works once
This is a limitation in WhatsApp's share extension, not in AFL Turnuva: it accepts the first share of a session and refuses later ones until WhatsApp is restarted. AirDrop, Mail, Notes and Save to Files all accept repeated shares. If you send pairing sheets to a group regularly, saving to Files and attaching from inside WhatsApp is the most reliable route.
Is my data private?
Yes. Tournaments, players and results are stored only on your device. The app makes no network connections of any kind and contains no analytics or third-party SDKs (App Privacy: Data Not Collected).
Is my data backed up?
No. Tournaments are stored only on the device and are not synced to any server. If your device is lost, replaced or reset, that data cannot be recovered by us. During an event, export the entry list, pairing sheets and standings as PDF and keep your own copies.
Reporting a problem with pairings
Pairing questions are much easier to answer with detail. Please include the number of players, which round it was, whether any players had withdrawn or received byes, and if possible the exported PDF of that round's pairings.
